Mathematics 4 (M4) is a new five-storey, 142,000 square foot building situated in the heart of the “Mathematics district” on the University of Waterloo campus in Waterloo, Ontario. Gillam was selected as the construction manager for the project. Part of the Faculty of Mathematics, the building connects directly to Mathematics and Computing, Mathematics 3 and the W.G. Davis Computer Research Centre. The new facility will consist of classroom space, labs and a cutting-edge, eco-friendly server room called the Green Room. M4 will empower students and researchers to solve the world’s most pressing problems in sustainability, security, health and society. M4 will develop the data-fluent, entrepreneurial leaders of tomorrow with spaces that encourage experiential learning and collaboration. Educational spaces include The West Lobby; The Gradient Gallery; The Polymorphic Classroom; The Nexus; and Student Lounges. M4 will accelerate innovation at the intersection of computer science, statistics and mathematics through cutting-edge labs, office space and technology. Research spaces consist of The Green Room; The CrySP Lab; the SyN Lab; The Quantitative Risk Management Lab; and The Mathematical Foundations of Data Science Lab. The building is developed with a set of guiding design principles which consider and respect Indigenous perspectives and include innovation, outreach, collaboration, sustainability, connectivity and green space.
