York University retained Gillam in collaboration with ZAS Architects to provide Integrated Project Delivery services for the construction of a four-storey addition to the Vari Hall building at York’s Keele Campus, which was originally built in the late 1980s. The addition will include new technology-enhanced, flexible teaching and learning spaces, research space, department offices, and student services and lounge spaces, improvements to the existing 2nd floor of Vari Hall and potential future potential connections to the Ross Building.

Some of the key programmatic features include a fully immersive, high flex learning classroom for 100 students divisible into two 50-seat spaces. An Indigenous pedagogy and teaching focused classroom capable of accommodating smudging ceremonies as well as additional semi active flex learning classrooms some of which will accommodate smudging ceremonies, seminar room, and a student lounge.

The project was designed to Net Zero Carbon.
