H&R REIT selected Gillam Group as its construction partner to deliver a 2-storey link bridge between two commercial towers in downtown Toronto. The existing tower complex was linked at the 4th and 5th floors via a bridge constructed of structural steel and curtainwall. The work is adjacent to the busy public atrium and sandwiched between the main loading dock and parking garage entrance. The work is also connects to fully occupied commercial spaces. Gillam engaged in extensive pre-construction planning including a project-specific logistics plan, schedule and budget that set the stage for seamless construction operation while not impacting the existing client’s activities. Key challenges include managing construction on a highly constrained urban site, performing major construction work adjacent to occupied spaces, tying in to operational life safety systems, and managing safety.
