The Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism observes the unified teachings of the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Its mission is to deliver all from suffering, both the living and the dead, by pursuing the way of community service, rituals and ceremonies, and the cultivation of body and mind.

Gillam was selected to deliver this iconic facility on Steeles Ave E. near Bayview Ave. The project required extensive consultation throughout the pre-construction stage with a focus on developing the budget and value engineering to achieve value for money. The facility is very unique in that the 1st floor slab has a 10 metre cantilever supported using a post-tensioned reinforcing system. Cladding comprises coreten steel and aluminum panels.

Key challenges included the following:

  1. Working with a large stakeholder group
  2. Aligning the client’s budget with the design through value engineering
  3. Managing the client’s budget during construction
  4. Managing site logistics on a tight urban site

The project was delivered according to an open book negotiated fixed price approach.

The project received an Ontario Concrete Award in 2015.
